What will happen during your appointment?
- Your procedure usually takes 15 minutes. Arrive 5 minutes early to fill out a Customer form if you are visiting us for the first time
- You will be asked to lie on a bed and remain very still
- Louise will place a small plastic cone in your ear to look into your ear using a microscope or surgical lamp
- A fine metal tube that is attached to a suction tube will be placed gently into your ear canal
- Ear wax and debris will be carefully removed and in some cases, forceps or probes may also be necessary
- During this procedure, any potential concerns such as perforated eardrum or ear infections can be identified under magnification.
- You may feel slightly dizzy if cold air comes into contact with your eardrum during microsuction. This feeling will pass in a few moments as your eardrum warms up again to normal body temperature.
- A light touch of your ear canal during the procedure may cause you to feel like coughing. Although uncommon, this is completely normal and is sometimes referred to as the Arnold Nerve Reflex. The curricular branch of the Vagas Nerve is located in your ear canal and when physically stimulated in some people, it may cause a cough reflex.
- On completion of the microsuction, Louise will form a care plan to establish a time frame for your next appointment. For some people it's once a year, and for others it is up to four times a year.
